Objective 1
OBJECTIVE 1
Establishing a Cultural House
A Design-Driven Model for Celebrating and Elevating Dominican Identity
Objective 1 defines the foundation of SUSTANTIVO.
It establishes the house as a multidisciplinary cultural platform devoted to the Dominican Republic, one that approaches identity through design, research, and material intention.
Sustantivo emerged in response to the flattened, commercialized, and often superficial representations of Dominican culture commonly found in mainstream media and consumer goods. Rather than simplifying identity for visibility, the house seeks to deepen it, asserting that the beauty of Dominican culture emerges through its depth, care, and quality of expression.
The intention was not to create a brand, a campaign, or a trend.
It was to build a cultural house: physical, digital, and conceptual, where Dominican identity could be explored with seriousness, restraint, and soul.
1. THE CHALLENGE
Contemporary representations of Dominican culture frequently suffer from four limitations:
- Oversimplification: complex histories reduced to visual shorthand
- Overcommercialization: symbols detached from meaning or context
- Inconsistency in quality: materials and execution that dilute cultural weight
- Lack of educational framing: objects presented without narrative or lineage
This absence revealed the need for a platform that could hold Dominican culture to the same standards of rigor, elegance, and depth found in respected cultural institutions.
2. THE APPROACH
Sustantivo operates on three intersecting principles:
- Education as design: Every object carries information. Every artifact teaches.
- Elegance without compromise: Refinement is not sterility, but intention.
- Substance over spectacle: Thoughtfulness and quality outweigh trend or noise.
3. MEDIUMS OF EXPRESSION
The house expresses these principles across three forms:
- Objects: Physical artifacts, headwear, printed matter, and future domestic objects, crafted with material integrity and symbolic care.
- Stories: Editorial work, documentation, and conversations that contextualize Dominican culture across geography, ancestry, migration, music, and material history.
- Experiences: Exhibits, installations, and gatherings designed to invite slower, deeper engagement with culture.
Each medium is treated not as merchandise or content, but as a cultural vessel.
4. DESIGN STANDARDS
All Sustantivo work adheres to shared standards:
- Material integrity: durable, considered materials chosen for longevity
- Historical grounding: informed by archival research, oral histories, and lived experience
- Visual restraint: minimal language and form that invite reflection rather than distraction
5. OUTCOME
Through this approach, Sustantivo has grown into:
- A developing archive of Dominican-centered objects and publications
- A community of creators and wearers invested in cultural depth over surface
- A platform that fosters curiosity, pride, and reverence through elevated presentation
6. CLOSING
Objective 1 establishes Sustantivo not as an aesthetic project, but as a cultural system, one that treats Dominican identity as living knowledge. Not something to be consumed, but something to be carried forward.
