ABOUT SUSTANTIVO
FOUNDING STATEMENT
SUSTANTIVO is a cultural house devoted to Dominican identity.
It was established in response to the limited ways Dominican culture is often represented, flattened into symbols, commercialized without context, or presented without care. Rather than simplifying culture for visibility, SUSTANTIVO exists to deepen it.
The house approaches Dominican culture through design, research, and material intention. Objects are treated as carriers of meaning. Stories are grounded in history, migration, and lived experience. Experiences are created to encourage slower, more thoughtful engagement.
The intention was not to create a brand, a campaign, or a trend.
It was to build a cultural system, physical, digital, and conceptual, where Dominican identity can be explored with seriousness, restraint, and respect.
The goal is not spectacle, but substance. Not consumption, but continuity.
CURATORIAL NOTE
All work produced by SUSTANTIVO follows shared standards.
Materials are chosen for durability and longevity. Design is restrained, allowing meaning to surface without distraction. Objects and stories are informed by archival research, oral history, and everyday Dominican life.
Whether expressed through physical objects, editorial work, or public experiences, each piece is treated as a cultural vessel, meant to inform, to carry memory, and to endure.
Dominican culture is living knowledge. SUSTANTIVO exists to hold it with care.
